I have an 04 xlt sport with the factory alarm in it. Questions.. Does it arm itself or only when I lock the doors and what does the red flashing light mean on the dash(steady on, blinking etc?)

that is the pats system it arms it self when you take out the key it only lets you know if some one tries to start your car with the wrong key

Mikeh44 is correct, and the light has also been described as the location for the dusk sensor (if equipped) and the alarm light indicator. If you walk away from your vehicle, it's best to lock it using the key fob. It will eventually arm itself, however locking it with the fob is best in my opinion. The light seems to never stop blinking :)

does it sound the horn if an attempt is made?

I know if the doors and/or windows are violated, both horns will wake up the neighbors :)
