Factory bed extender

Ranger Fans, need your input!

Have a '94 Ranger 2wd with 7ft bed. Picked up a used Ford bed extender but without attaching hardware. I can find the strikers and grommets, but it appears something else in needed. The extender is 48" wide but the bed at the point it would attach is about 51. Are the newer Ranger beds narrower at the tailgate, or is there some kind of bracket I need to make this work? Appreciate any thoughts...
