Recently, I noticed the following symptoms:
- slips in reverse
- occasional clunk while shifting out of reverse
- a metal grinding sound not related to the brakes coming from the rear end

My question is what is the likelihood that all of these symptoms be attributed to a rearend and/or u-joints? I don't want to tear into the rear end and start replacing components if the slipping in reverse is 100% going to be transmission only.

EDIT: I made that post rather confusing to even myself. It may be easier if I asked if slipping in reverse can be attributed to anything other than transmission failure.

That would only be from the transmission or transfer case, not the rear-end, rarely the shift forks in the transfercase can go bad and cause a no reverse issue

Exactly as I thought...but wanted confirmation of.

Thanks!

I actually have good news to report!

A local shadetree came over and climbed under the truck with me and showed me a band adjustment. Now, I've read here that there are no reverse band adjustments on these transmissions...but he said different. I'm certainly not arguing with either side...but we could not make it slip after the adjustment and before the adjustment it would slip very easily.

I can't explain it, nor do I question it. However, I'm excited that it works again.
