Need some advice. I am in the process of replacing a timing cover gasket that had a slow coolant leak. Engine is the 5.0 liter, 2001 awd. I dropped the oil pan to provide the necessary clearance to get the cover off. I am using the Felpro 45450 gasket kit to put everything back together again. Neither my kit, nor another sealed kit at the parts store had any instructions in the box, and I am unsure whether I need to cut and remove the front of the oil pan gasket or not. Pretty sure it needs to be out of the way, and the cork corners replace it, but I wanted to make sure I needed to do this before I started. Thanks for any help or advice....

If yours still has the stock rubberized steel oil pan gasket, just clean it and re-use it.

For future reference you do not have to pull the pan to do this repair, just pull the cover and the necessary bolts attaching it to the pan.

That cork garbage the kit comes with should be thrown away, i like to use some rtv in the corners of the pan, block, cover meeting area as well.

Unless one is extremely careful (and possibly even then), the silicone attached to the metal gasket is likely to be torn in the process of pulling the timing cover off, especially if the pan is not dropped. If so, the metal gasket cannot be simply cleaned and reused. Don't ask me how I know (hint: had to do the job twice).
Perhaps replacing the the torn silicone with RTV will do the trick.

I've done this same job a couple of times. You only need to remove the 4 bolts from the oil pan into the timing cover. Reuse the gasket as it is a one piece and much better quality gasket than the cork. Use rtv in the corner to prevent leaking.

Most important, make sure the tabs on the U shaped gasket are pushed up into timing cover. They will want to slip when you install it. I recommend a light oil coating on the oil pan to help this gasket slide into place. This will be a tight fit as it slips into place. Use all four bolts near the bottom of the cover as you draw it in.

Good Luck!

Thanks all for the advice, I really appreciate it.
