Fender body moldings... 2 different styles?

I have a 98 Sport I recently bought. The previous owner had some body work done that included replacing the left fender. BUT, they did not replace the molding so it had no molding and several holes that are prepunched in the fender. So I bought a replacement molding but discovered it would not cover holes in the fender along the wheel opening. So I assume the fender was supposed to be for the painted moldings found on upgraded models. Was this option available every year of that generation? I'm having a hard time referencing a different part number for that trim piece other than the one I have.
