Flashback - 2015 acquisition of the Saleen Explorer Hood from Saleen XP8 Ford Explorer 00–0023

In 2015 I had the opportunity to acquire the Saleen Design Hood that was originally installed on Saleen XP8 Ford Explorer 00-0023. The hood was in poor condition with a considerable amount of stress cracks and overall the production quality from Saleen left a lot to be desired. I had the hood completely refurbished and painted to match the White Pearl Clearcoat Metallic of Big White Ford Explorer. Many labor hours went into improving the hood in many ways to a better quality than it was when new.

The Saleen Design Lightweight Hood was a $1,750.00 option on the 2000 Saleen XP8 Ford Explorer.

now thats cool!!!!! that hood looks sick

The XP8 hood was a very nice and subtle design, I like them. But I had in mind a Cobra F1(aftermarket made for F150's etc) hood, similar to the small scoops of a Mustang Cobra but larger openings.

I finally got a maker to sell me just three pieces of one of those, cut from the top skin of one. I had a person who could have built the hood for me, but he was retiring and then disappeared a long while ago. It would take skill to graft fiberglass pieces onto a steel hood, cut some sections out, and recover the whole thing. The end weight is an issue, a CF hood is really light, as is fiberglass. But adding onto a steel hood, that's another issue.

Do you have a picture of that?

I saved one picture of that hood, I haven't tried to find one for many years. It was kind of popular for the Lightning back 20 years ago.

Yes, that was Troll, and his truck was well known way back in the late 90's. He had evidently by word of mouth, full length headers, and he bought it new. The hood caught my eye when I saw that in the early 2000's, and I kept an eye out for any way to make something like that.
