I doubt this is a question that can really be answered, but I thought I would throw it out and see if I can get some responses from owners that have had Ex's for a few years, or maybe others with HID lights.

From what I read cycling HID's is what "hurts" them the most. I think this is the reason on Limiteds with HID lights they turn on the Amber lights as DRL instead of the HID's.

I have a question if these two scenarios will impact the life of my factory HID's on my Explorer. (I had my 2007 Ex for 6 years and never changed a bulb).

1. Flashing (pulling back on the turn signal) during daytime for various reasons like letting someone know it is OK to pull out, let a trucker know he can come over, warn others of speed traps, etc. I typically give 2-3 pulls on my lights in these situations.

2. My garage is dark, so almost every time I get in my car and start it up, the auto lights turn on for about 30 seconds, until I pull out of the garage and it detects it is daylight. It also happens sometimes going under long underpasses, short tunnels, etc.

My wife has a 2007 Acura MDX with HID and the HID's turn on everytime the drivers door is opened and we have never had to replace a bulb in it. Not sure if Acura uses "higher quality" HID's.

I assume these Ford HID's were built for normal useage like flashing and short cycles from the auto headlight feature. Should I turn OFF the auto headlamp feature to extend the life, or will that only have a marginal affect on HID life?

Have a good weekend everyone.

Jeff

Everyday use like that won't hurt the bulbs. They're designed for that in mind and all the OEMs use quality bulbs. Over time you'll begin to notice the color start to fade and the lights start to dim. If you were to replace one of the bulbs in the MDX with a new factory one you'd definitely see the difference. That's why the recommend replacing them in pairs.

My Saab for the first four years of it's life had the HIDs on all the time. They're still burning strong.

Not sure how factory bulbs work so this all my be irrelevant but I've converted to HIDs in my 2000.

Im not able to flash my lights when they are off because the the brights work by physically moving the bulb with a magnet (it uses the brights circuit to power the magnet) That is a down side.

I think all HIDs need a large spike of power to "ignite" the bulb, this is why they flash brightly for a instant, and then go dim and slowly get brighter. I guess you could flip the switch several times if you needed to signal someone in the day time, but Ive found that they don't flash from the spike of power all the time.

I do have auto lights, but I keep them off for the reasons you described, no reason the lights need to be coming on and off like that, and if you cant remember to have your lights on when you need them, then you have a problem. I would say it does hurt life, but its within there design parameters.

Another thing, my truck will flash its lights when they lock key is pressed twice, the sprike of power makes them flash fine, but I cant imagine thats good for the bulbs, so I try not to do it alot.

I think the lights will last years and years under these normal uses, its hard to say when one goes out what the cause was though.
