So I've also got a 2006 Ford Focus ZX4 S, very basic car. One day we were driving along in the middle of the night and the O/D light started flashing on and off and the car started shaking light it was going to start throwing parts.
I tried pushing the O/D button and the light would flicker then start flashing again, so I put it in 2nd gear and drove the rest of the way to where we were going.
Not a transmission problem - someone had put a full can of mountain dew on the center console and it had fallen over and spilled into the gear shift selector in the center console.
Once it dried out, everything was fine again.
