i was off roading and went through a 30 foot puddle that was about three feet deep. I almost made it through, but i was about 4 feet short. i sucked too much water into my intake and the explorer just shut off. I got out of the water ok, and got towed home. I charged the battery the entire night but i still cant get it to turn over. I tried to hit the starter with a hammer to get that water out of there. is there anything else i can do with the starter, distributor or anyhting else, any information or suggestions would be great. thanks

You broke the magnets in the starter by hitting it. Buy a new starter.

i didnt really hit it, but just a 4 or 5 real light taps, do you think that could be the problem

looked under the hood again, i know its not my battery, its low but still working and my cables are on tight now so thats good, i just dont know what else to do, anybody.....

If is not the starter it is HYDROLOCKED, the first thing to do is to dissamble the intake. If the air filter is destroyed then you likely got water in the combustion chambers. Next step is to remove the spark plugs and try turn over the engine by hand. But dont expect a miracle. It is likely that you have bent a connection rod. If it is hydrolocked then plan on a engine swap.

thanks unclemeat, im gunna go try and pull the intake out, hopefully its all in there. thanks again

alright, ive got some good news, pulled the dipstick out and there wasnt water on that, so hopefully thats okay, the fuse and the battery connector are pretty coroaded, so maybe thats it. i charged it all night and the batttery level is still super low. thanks again guys

Don't even waste your time on the battery right now. You need to pull the plugs, get a new battery or jump it from another car, and crank all the water out of the combustion chamber. The longer you wait, the less likely it is to ever run again.

yeah there are a few threads on HYdrolocking on here the main thing is to crank then engine by hand to get the water out of the combustion chambers....then worry about samll stuff like the battery.

The oil is the minor area, the water is sucked in through the intake and sitting in your pistons. Please don't even think of trying to turn the engine over without removing the spark plugs... If you try and crank it and the starter groans it is because it is trying to compress a piston full of water (which isn't going to happen).. If you keep cranking it will bend/break valves and connecting rods... If you remove ALL the spark plugs then any water trapped in side will be ejected through the hole when you crank the engine...
