Flowmaster 40 Gas mileage improvement??

The problem is newer vehicles are pretty damn efficient in stock form and bolt ons offer little benefit. But prove me wrong and post some dyno sheets

good thing we're talking about a 94 explorer here in this thread.

as for a 99sohc, heck yea! there's a classified here for a 2002 Ford Explorer for 900 dollars. I'm calling tomorrow, the ad literally says "2002 Ford Explorer, runs great, getting divorce, must sell!"

i woudln't feel right if she was selling it because she was broke, but if she was selling her ex's ex... (pun intended) i'd buy that so quick.

Like I said, post up some dyno sheets, I'm capable of reading and am well aware of what vehicle we're talking about. 24MPG from an explorer is pretty far fetched, best freeway millage I ever got with my 2.9 was 23 in stock form, 24MPG is the upper spectrum of what I've heard anyone get with a lighter 4.0 ranger.

Well if it's a 1994 Explorer 2WD, it's rated at 14 miles per gallon city and 19 miles per gallon highway. At least according to this website http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/11457.shtml

So getting 20-21 highway like Proto stated seems about right depending on what type of fuel used and any other upgrades he's done. 24 doesn't seem like it's to out of reach, in fact I think that's totally achievable with the modifications done right.

Protomind, I think if make sure the modifications are done perfect, 24 should be able to be achieved very easily. By perfect I mean the air intake should be fabbed up to suck in cold air, and I'm going to try something out on my Explorer this week in this sense. I also think widening your exhaust to it's optimal level woudl help a lot, especially headers, a high flow cat, and a good cat back exhaust.

^^^^^^^^^

There's your seat of the pants dyno sheet.

Newer cars are more eficient but are still restricted cause automakers have to pass missions test, sound tests, drivetrain warranty restrictions, mpg regulations, and all kinds of other bs. The exuahst has to be so quiet, the intake has to be so quiet, you have to recycle some exhaust gas to lower emissions which means less oxygen in the combustion chamber.

The EPA may think there saving the world but there just emptying your wallet
if it weren't for there regulations your car would be more powerful and MORE efficient.
Emmisions equipment actually LOWERS efficiency, not the other way.

also Aldive has gotten 30mpg and he has the V8

Thank you captain obvious... Like I've said for the 3rd time, post up some dyno sheets, your seat of the pants dynos don't cut it because it can't give numbers. There simply aren't significant gains to be had from basic bolt ons, certainly not 4mpg over already excellent gas millage for an explorer.

Wow I give up. Nobody said you could bolt on an exhaust and turn your ex into a prius. But gains are certainly possible. If bolt ons didnt work then why is it such a thriving business? I have experienced gains in my ex and others have too if you want to waist your 40$ on a dyno that proves us right, well then you go right ahead. As for me, I'm going to sleep.

As for aldive. I would have sworn he had a v8, don't remember were I heard that. But still, 30mpg! I can only dream.

good night. :-D

i just have one more thin to say before going to bed as well.

Protomind, DO NOT BUY THE TORNADO/TURBONATOR. THEY DON'T WORK, lol.

protomind

Sorry I got kinda off topic there.

Final answer: I believe you can get more miles from the flowmaster. It may not be a life altering, I see the light, Jesus comes down from heaven to thank you for your contribution to the world, event. I wouldn't even expect more than 1-1.5 mpg(and that's pushing it) it all depends on driving style.

Anyway good luck on the muffler(if you decide to get it) and on getting your girl to chip in.

Thank you black sheep and yes turbonator BAD!! ;)

*** Note*** I am not a expert, this is just a summary of much of what I have read on TRS ,Ford-Trucks, here and other places.***
I have read a couple of "what works with the 4.0L " threads that have the distilled wisdom of that sites knowledge, coming form V8 Olds,Buicks, small block Chevs I just about cried . I read dozens of web pages, countless threads and the sum of it all is this good air filter, bigger throttle body, chip, cat back all the tune up stuff and gears matched with tires (and good tire pressure) all work and give back enough to make them worthwhile. Headers sound nice but do not return your investment, throttle spacer , waste of time, coil and ignition.. if yours is working good leave it alone, If you do all the things that work great on pretty much anything else you might as well drop in a V8 as you will spend almost as much money for less performance. My $0.02.

Oh, 1st thing I did to my truck after new plugs & wires was a Flowmaster 40 series. I do not know if it helped as my truck had a running rich problem (mostly but not completely solved). But holy cr*p do I love the way it sounds!

Yeah that noise is like a work of art isn't it.

I agree with most all of what you said except I think spacers do help on carb engines but it stops there.
From what ive read about headers if you've already done EVERYTHING else you might as well slap on a pair but like you said won't get your moneys worth.

The thing I like about staying with V6 is that everyhing is simplified that much.
Stuff usually costs less for em. And you only have to buy 6 pistons/ringsets/rods/spark plugs/wires/injectors Etc...

And you can get plenty of power out of em if done right and if you use an un-leaded foot as well as unleaded gas you can keep that v6 eficiency.

Granted it'l never record the fastest 1/4 mile time in automotive history but you can certainly smoke those pesky hondas and putzs with dadies bmw.
