After spending some time with the Search Function I decided to post a few questions about a new Flowmaster Muffler for my 96 Explorer 5.0L V8 AWD.

1) Is a 3" Muffler too Big or just Perfect for the 5.0L if I am only doing a single inlet/outlet muffler with a Y pipe before the inlet for the 2 pipes going in. Don't want to lose any torque or power when instaliing this muffler and I am trying to figure out what size pipe for the above setup.

2) Is a dump installed right after the muffler illegal in any way or won't pass inspection? There is a chance that if what ever Flowmaster I choose is not loud enough that I might have a dump pipe installed right after the muffler only if it is legal and i will have no problem passing inspection. Also would alot of fumes get into the vehicle with a the muffler dumped?

3) Last but not least, I have narrowed it down to 2 mufflers, the 40 Series Delta Flow or the 50 Series Delta Flow. Can anyone that has experience or has heard both of these mufflers before comment on the pros or cons of each. My explorer is my daily driver, so i am looking for a nice aggressive sound for it but also be able to take it on the highway for a trip without an annoying drone. thanks for all the help

what would sound better? Y pipe your intlet and go thru a super 40 series single in single out swept side? or...y pipe inlet and go thru single in duel out and go 2 pipes out the sides with a original 40 series? (4.0L SOHC)

1) Go with Dual 2-1/4" In Single 3" Out. 50 series part # #524553, don't know the 40 series #.

2) Depends on where you live.

3) Go with the 40 series and remove the resonator too. It will be loud enough
and no drone prob. @ hwy speeds.

thanks for the replys.
302Xplorer, I live in NJ if that helps for #2. If I do go for the 40 Series Delta Flow, they don't have a duel in Muffler. Should I get a 3" Inlet/Outlet then or is this gonna be too big for the 5.0L. Some say it is, some say it isn't, so thats why i am trying to figure out what pipe size to go with. thanks

Go with the 50 series then. I didn't know there was no dual inlet. If this is the case then I am def. going with the 50 series. I removed my resonater and could tell a diff. As for the pipe size, I say stick to the stock size. You can go w/ the larger diameter and "make it fit" but you are more likely to have problems with that set up down the road. 2 in 1 out no res. and a V8 will sound bada$$.

Dual 2-1/4" In Single 3" Out ,is stock

you should'nt bother with flowmasters, magna flows are a better exhaust system better back pressure.

I've never liked the sound of the magna's... Flowmaster's only here, i have a sound clip of an orig. flow 40 on my expy in my sig.

How do magnaflow mufflers have better back pressure when the ones I've seen are straight through w/ perforations internally? Flows are all chambers/baffles, which to me would be a less direct path for exhaust gasses..

I've ridden in jtsmith's 5.0 Mountaineer & he has either a Delta 40 or Delta 50.
The drone will drive you nuts at all speeds.

Yup, just like that hot chick that is cool at first, but won't shut up.

I am going to break up with my muffler--it is anoying on the highway--need to crank the stereo up to hear the sub.

It is a 50 series dual in out

click the link in sig to hear

Jon, that is a hillarious euphemisim. I'm going to have to steal that.:D

Probably my all time favorite one is from the move Chasing Amy.

You guys need to keep this thread going

I think it might help me talk my wife into a new muff.
:D

Hell Jon, with as loud as it is I'm suprised she has not made oyu get rid of it long before now. I know my wife would not ride in my Mounty or drive it if it was loud.

When we traded vehicles last year because of gas prices she made me take my KC Area Explorer stickers off because it was "too guy looking":(

Now that I took it back since I got her Suzuki X90 for her I wish I had my stickers back. I used them to spot my Mounty in parking lots.

I liked my dynomax three chamber I had before I put on my headers. It sounded good but had drone at highway speeds, especially with any weight. I am getting old now so the drone had to stop, but a younger me would have loved it.

I now have a y pipe and a single in single out 2.5" dumped just before the axle. The muffler is a $20 "turbo" muffler from advance auto. It sounds nice at idle outside the truck but can barely be heard inside. On the highway it is as quiet as stock exhaust, until I open it up and then it sounds good but is not overly loud. I even pull my travel trailer and it doesn't drone. I can hear it but its not annoying at all.

The flowmaster is far superior to magnafart in every aspect. THere is more backpressure with a flowmaster as well. Magnafart has a different pitch, raspy type sound to it. And if you donn't like the sound of a flowmaster, then you don't need an exhaust, a performance vehicle, or a 4x4. You girls want to see a real exhaust, check this:

True Dual 3" into flowmaster 50 series. With the blower forcing it down the throat of the 5.4, the exhale sounds like a F"ing Nascar when you get on it. And its as tame as a little pussy cat out on the interstate, or can be drowned out with a little radio volume around town. Also, I had never welded before when I did this. Yes there were leaks, and I have since them fixed them.

Oh I see. Working in a quicky lube place has made you an "expert" in mufflers as well as oil & oil filters.

Again why don't you post something to back up your opinions.

I did not see SR77 asking for an exhaust for a 5.4 in the first place or wanting the sound of a "F"ing Nascar".

stang99x - your just a little full of yourself, and as said he was not looking to put exhaust on a forced induction 5.4. Your posts seem to usually involve you putting people down and trying to make yourself sound amazing.

SR77 - While i have no personal experiance with the 5.0, I have seen on EF here that a dual in/single 3" out seems to work awesome for these vehicles. As far as recommending a muffler, I have no advice as I only know what mufflers sound like what on the 4.0 V6. Good luck with your search.
