FYI there is no point in dumping the exhaust after the muffler. Dumps are meant for before the muffler to eliminate the muffler. Once it hits the muffler you might as well just let it go out the tailpipe

blah

what if you dont want tail pipes? i have a 99 explorer v8 and want to get 2 50 series welded up and a turn down spout on each no piping and maybe take out 1 cat but i dont want a nascar sound just a good v8 truck sound ya know? any input guys? thanks
Dan

My sig has the 40, if it's too loud go for the 50, if you think it's really too loud, go for the 70/80.. eos

Which Magnaflow owner pee'd in your cheerios?

The flowmaster is far superior to magnafart in every aspect. THere is more backpressure with a flowmaster as well. Magnafart has a different pitch, raspy type sound to it. And if you donn't like the sound of a flowmaster, then you don't need an exhaust, a performance vehicle, or a 4x4. You girls want to see a real exhaust, check this:

True Dual 3" into flowmaster 50 series. With the blower forcing it down the throat of the 5.4, the exhale sounds like a F"ing Nascar when you get on it. And its as tame as a little pussy cat out on the interstate, or can be drowned out with a little radio volume around town. Also, I had never welded before when I did this. Yes there were leaks, and I have since them fixed them.

I speak of magnfart the way I do based on personal experience. They are crap. On the shelf of your local pepboys, right next to the ricer mufflers. Try and get one replaced under warranty, then come back and see me.

If you don't like my opinion, thats great for you. Opinions are like buttholes, everybody has one and some smell worse than others. I come off harsch. I speak highly of products that have performed, and badly of those that haven't. I have been there and done that with just about anything that can be done to an explorer. I have had 7 of them. I currently drive the 300HP 2005 Aviator, the perfected explorer. I know this as I have had what seems like one of all of them, 92, 92, 93, 94, 95, 99, 01, 05.

And I don't know what you are talking about with my avatar, its a picture of an explorer, not animated or otherwise.

And dumps do serve a purpose.. THe sound of the exhuast is totally different with dumps than it is with tailpipes.

And finally, if you are all offended at being called girls, well then, I take a page from Arnolds book I guess. Explorer girlie men:eek:

I have a '99 302 with a custom bent 2 3/4'' pipe, no resonater, and a Flowmaster 50 series, dual in, single out. It sounds great, but be prepared to burn up an EGR valve within the first year ($130 fix, upgraded EGR at the dealership). The loss in backpressure has effected the low end torque some, but has broadened the torque curve across the band. It also breathes better on the interstate, especially when you have to get on it to pass someone. Honestly, it drones, but most aftermarket systems do. Mine hits a pretty bad drone at about 65 mph, around 2000 rpm. Just the perfect interstate cruise speed. But that will all vary with gearing, etc (I have the LSD 3:73's in mine). I've had this exhaust for 3 years, and love hearing it come to life every morning. Plus it sets of the alarm of a new M3 in my parking garage downtown. Whatever you pick, be prepared for a drop in gas mileage, not from the exhaust, but from the joy you'll get when you stomp on it, and hear that tone resonate from your "grocery getter". It sure pisses off all those rice rocket tuners when they get beat off the line.

Cgriffin, I said it was the first time I ever welded damnit.

McDavis, you are right. There is a slight loss of low end torque, this is however made up with an increase of HP and better broadband torque throughout. I found this with my supercharged 5.4 as well. My torque was at peak by 2400 rpm and held steady through to 4400 rpm before beginning to drop.

It was, I dunno about 2 years ago. Me and a buddy (his shop had a pipe bender, mine doesn't as we don't really do exhaust) did it in 12 hours. Took off the old, designed a new true dual system, bent it, welded it, and as soon as I finished I drove it over 1000 miles in the next 3 days. Got better gas mileage and loved the badazz sound!

I recently had a Flowmaster muffler put on. How do I find out what searies it is? My dad brought it down to the shop for me. The muffler they put on was a single inlet only, and the explorers have dual inlets. SO they welded a Y for it to work. Is this bad? I told them to use the stock tail pipe. since nothing was wrong with it.

Not sure how to teel which series it is because I don't think it is stamped anywhere on the muffler, but you can check. Or try looking on the receipt or calling the shop. Don't worry about the y-pipe, i have a 3" single in, single out 50 series on mine and mine has the same setup without any problems so far.

Please specify which "50"-series you are using. Flowmaster makes a 50 Heavy Duty, 50 Delta Flow, 50 Delta Force, 50 SUV, and 50 Big Block (did they make a 50-original?). According to their site, www.flowmastermufflers.com/mufflers.html, there are HUGE differences in sound level between all of them (they're site is very confusing).

Raminator, there should be a serial number stamped on the muffler housing by the outlet pipe, use that to figure out the series.

I recently put on two Original-40's 2.25" mufflers, replacing the original stock muff location. I have the 4.0 SOHC. I haven't put any pipes on the outlets yet.

The truck sounds awesome at idle. I thought I was in heaven, but then I got it on the highway and the drone is a huge headache! and it's kind of get pulled-over loud too

Will tailpipes bring down the highway drone a lot? I was really hoping to use turndowns or even 45-degree turndowns not pointing directly at the ground. This way the set-up is extremely simple and cheaper and i don't have to deal with routing tailpipes to over the axle.

Otherwise, I might want to change to a 50-something. Plus, since I have to use 2 single in 40's because they don't make a dual-in/dual-out muff, the muffs are hanging inches away from the ground, and offroading impossible.

My 3" single in/Out Flowmaster is a 50 series Delta Flow. Perfect sound, loud enough to turn heads but not headache loud for driving. A long highway trip might get alittle annoying for other people, but i would be fine!!!
