Adding Fog Lights on Base Pre 2016 Model

I have a 2013 explorer base and wanted some fog lights. Dealer price for fog lights was $125 x 2 and $60 just to mount them with no wiring. I said screw that, I went to Wal-Mart and purchased some $20 fog lights and mounted them myself with some homemade brackets. All I need is the wiring which I will do this week. Tell me what you think.

This is a mod that I am definitely wanting to do. Any chance that you can show us the bracket you made? Or have a step by step (i.e. how did you cut the hole, wiring diagram for hookup, etc..).

Nice job congrats, im about to do the same, the only thing I did order from Ford, was the XLT light switch with the button for the fogs, I want it to look stock from the inside.

That answer would likely be NO and YES. The NO would be for the intended use of the OEM's as FOG lights. The installed ones are Driving lights and as such would likely be ineffective in fog or similar conditions. I don't see why some drivers use the fog lights in normal night driving along with their headlights. I'm glad that some jursidictions have made that illegal. As I have posted in other threads, this is just a form of light pollution hindering the ability of oncoming traffic to see properly, especially if they are not adjusted properly.
That being said, they certainly do add to the appearance of the base model in a very positive way. Nice job lowqjr.

Something to keep in mind if these are classified as fog lights. From what I've read, in Texas, fog lights must be aimed so that the driver's side light projected beam is no higher that 4" below the center of the lamp at 25 feet. If I were to use my Limited as an example that would mean that the beam at 25 feet cannot be higher that 12" off the ground. The center of my fog lamp is 16".

True fogs are yellow.
Our 'fog' lights might as well be DLR's, too weak for any serious illumination.

True fogs are yellow...

No - some are - but most real foglights are plain old white lights. Either works fine.

Fogs need to have a distinct vertical light cut off and a very wide beam. It is the beam pattern that is important not the color.

Driving lights are not fog lights. Driving lights are usually supplemental high beams, however they can also be supplemental low beams - the difference is critical - you should not have supplemental high beams active except in high beam mode...

These are probably mounted too low to be effective as long throw low beams anyway... True fogs would have been a better choice - esp as DRL's

If you wire these as the stock fogs are wired and they are aux high beams (and from the packaging I think they are) you will have them on at the wrong times and will be blinding those driving towards you.

For all those wondering how i cut out the plastic for the fog lights, I used a kitchen knife and one of those single razor blades. It looks perfect but its not. I'll take pics of the plastics cut outs.
