The 4.6 2v can make absolute ****-tons of power when modded right so there really is no need to swap to the 5.4 2v. Both engines (assuming they came out of just your normal Explorer or Expedition) will hold about the same amount of power (400-450rwhp) before needing a rebuild with more stout internals. I seriously doubt most on here will build their bottom end, but allot seem to like forced induction. Just a supercharger or turbocharger system (with accompanying mods like injectors, MAFS, BAP, Tune) alone will easily allow you to make 400-450rwhp in either engine. That is not too shabby at all for a family SUV. That is what I did with my 4.6 2v Explorer about 5-6 years ago when I had done just the Kenne Bell 2.2 blower on it at about 8 psi boost pushing 360rwhp/360rwtq and it was a fun truck even then. Since then I have gone much further with the truck but even back then with essentially just the blower on with low boost it was a pretty fun vehicle. Sorry, went off on a bit of a tangent.
Jager, you can mod your 4.0 SOHC engine to put down some decent power too. Throw a little Eaton M62 or M90 on there and you can easily be making as much horsepower at your rear tires as what the 4.6 does at the flywheel when in stock & near stock form.
When I was going through the process of switching from modding the Ford 302 Windsor motors and getting into the 4.6 modular motors I posted allot of information from my personal findings on this forum years back. There are multiple threads with basically any information a person would need to build their 4.6 2v Explorer past 600rwhp. Maybe the threads are so old that it is hard to find them anymore since they may be archived or something. That would be a shame because pretty much any question that I have seen asked with regard to 4.6's in general, or to modifying the Gen III 02-05 Explorers for horsepower and 1/4 mile racing, has been answered in depth in here long ago.
Will that work for the 'drive by wire' guys? In regards to the differences between cable throttle and electric throttle, can anyone touch on that in regards to intake mods?
Unfortunately this will not work for drive by wire. I purchased one from Summit Racing since it said they would work on 2004 models....and it wouldn't. Since I live in Akron, Ohio close to Summit and Trick Flow I contacted TrickFlow about this. They had me come down to their shop so they could take pictures of my Explorer. They told me they would would develop one for the drive by wire models and possibly use my truck as a test vehicle. After almost a year of calling them and getting no replies I finally got in touch with someone and they told me they were not going to go any further with developing one.
Sorry but you are going to have to do some searching for those. But they all should be in either the Need for Speed section of the Modified 2002-2005 Explorers section. It has been so long ago that I cannot remember exactly where they are, but they are still probably there. Just buried under a pile of "Will duals work on my 02 V8 Explorer?" and "Will Mustang Cobra Longtube headers work for my Explorer?" threads. lol

It should work, but I'd search and find a combo with both, you'll save money. Also, you can go to mustang site and search in their for sale section and usually catch one for sale, save even more

Fedy, any mustang 4.6 (cable) T-body will work. Becareful on the combo t-bodies and elbows. I have only found these for mustangs and the mustang plenum elbow requires modification to work on the explorer. Mustangs didn't come with a vacuum brake booster so there is no provision for the vacuum line in the mustang plenum elbows. The Trick Flow piece however does have the provisions for the brake booster line.
yeh im looking for the 2 to just bolt on but im still searching i dont mind making the modification to it but i would rather just buy a drop in plug n play throttle body and phlenom.i believe Tylers02 has the throttle body mod and i PM him asking a few questions
If I remember I'll take a picture of mine......I have been running a custom ported and polished trick flow upper plenum matched ported with my stock TB. I had a mustang TB on, but went back to the modded stock one.. HP increase is noticeable, but so was the MPG loss.
