I've had too many concerns lately!

A DAY before I bought my truck ('99 4.0 ranger) the FORD dealer replaced the power steering pump. The salesman said they thought the original was getting a bit noisy.

I'd like to know what the ORIGINAL sounded like!!!

Yes, I'm 100% certain it's a new pump...but it's just whiney. You can even hear it as the truck is idling!

I know that noisy PS pumps are inherent on certain year Fords, but my '00 Explorer 5.0 is totally silent.I even added a synthetic additive (can't remember brand but popular) and it didn't quiet it down a bit.

we had an 86 ranger when i was a kid, the PS pump made noise from day 1 but never quit. just use the noise as an excuse to get a rumbly exhuast/intake to cover it up.

Heh, yeah, right? I want an exhaust on the 4.0 (OHV) just not sure what muffler. On my '88 2.9 I have a flowmaster delta 40 (?) I THINK, and it really does sound good.

Just don't want to sound like a Honda with a fart can.

OK, went to get an inspection today and talked with the mechanic whose good friend is a Ford mechanic ...he mentioned that one of the things they do to get the air out of the system is:

*jack up the front end so the tires are off the ground and you are able to turn the steering wheel left and right

*disable your fuel injection

*crank engine while turning the wheel to the left and to the right

How this is supposed to work I don't know but the Ford dealer replaced the pump a day before I bought it and its just too noisy, turning and at idle.

the thing about ford pumps is that 90% of them all wine like that even mine does but it will probley never blow

and i dont see y u would want to crank ur starter to death like that y wouldnt u just let it idle

Davey...I was thinking the same thing...killing the starter and battery although I'm not sure how long you're supposed to do this for.

I just hate hearing the waaaaaaaaaaaa at idle...I KNOW its the pump...I put my stethoscope right to it and waaaaaaaa heheh.

ill tell u rite now its the pump thats the only thing that would wine like that like ur rite
and i hate the noise to, if thats what the ford guy said to do then try it, but i would just let it idle instead, and if the speed of the engine matters that much then just turn the idle screw out till its barely runing
