I have a f250 with dual tanks the problem is you can run on front tank for about 2 mile then it will quit switch to the back tank then it overloads the cylinders with gas causing black smoke and dies at intersections any ideas?

...It may be the "tank switcher" unit...I forget the full name but it is not controlled by a switch...It is a plastic case that sits on the drivers side frame between the tank and the high pressure fuel pump, with a bunch of fuel lines running to it...they are a little over $100 bucks from the Dealer only, and they are a Dealer only part I believe...

...When my old one went out it actually pushed the fuel out of the gas cap on one of the tanks...I hope this helps you out..

...This ay also be a fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump problem also..:dunno:

It was a common failure part on the previous gen of F-series, what year is yours?

On my 1990, the rear tank will drain into the front tank. I researched the problem online, and found that there was a recall or something on the switch.
