DETROIT, June 24 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co. <F.N> said on Monday that the Lincoln Blackwood luxury pickup truck will go out of production later this summer, after one of the shortest runs for a mass market vehicle in the history of the modern auto assembly line.

"The way we've evaluated the program at this point, it doesn't makes sense for us to go forward with it," said Jeremy Barnes, a spokesman for Ford's Lincoln division.

Confirming a report that first appeared in industry weekly Automotive News, Barnes said "a very, very small quantity" of 2003 models of the four-door truck would be built before production ends in August.

But like the ill-fated Edsel, which Ford produced in the late 1950s, critics say the Blackwood is something that never should have seen the light of day.

Ford had initially hoped to sell up to 10,000 Blackwoods a year when the vehicle went on sale last November. But Barnes said only about 900 were expected to have sold through the end of this month.

With a price tag of nearly $53,000, the Blackwood was aimed at the top end of the lucrative U.S. pickup segment.

It was plagued by quality and production issues from day one, however. And marketing problems included the vehicle's lack of four-wheel drive, popular among buyers in the snow belt. Like Henry Ford's old Model T, it also only came in black.

Other factors which industry analysts have blamed for killing sales of the Blackwood included its truck bed cover, or tonneau, which was power operated but virtually impossible to remove or lift high enough to store large cargo items.

And the truck bed itself -- carpeted and lined with brushed aluminum and flashy LED display lights -- looked fine for hauling golf clubs or a suitcase but nothing that might leave a stain.

"This vehicle was never really given serious consideration by engineers or at least certainly by people that would use it on a daily basis," Art Spinella, head of Bandon, Oregon-based, industry tracking firm CNW Marketing Research, said in a recent interview.

"It was an orphan from day one."

--------------

I knew it was just a matter of time before this happened lol. If anyone has oh say $40 grand laying around (they should discount them about 10k at the dealerships now) and wants a garunteed classic in about 25 years, buy a Blackwood and store it somewhere.

Yeah this blackwood thing is gonna go in some rich guy's garage right next to his Mustang Cobra R. The blackwood is no compeition for the Cadillac pickup anyway. It's a 4x4 with about 50 more horses.

I personally think the whole "luxury pickup" thing is stupid, but the Cadillac sells well... I would buy a Blackwood and hang on to it if I had somewhere to store it, it'd be a nice heirloom to pass down lol

I've seen the blackwoods and there nice but damn, for the price, you could get a navigator SUV and SAVE money. Maybe they learned that people at least want the option of four-wheel drive in a truck, especially sinc ein states like Colorado, if you have a truck that isn't four-wheel drive come winter time you'll be spinning your wheels. That or load up the truck with sand and that would make the "luxury" truck look kinda trashy, LOL.

It was meant for the "manly" men of the country club circuit :) Seems there aren't too many of them, though...

Hey, I belong to a Country Club! ;)

You really couldn't put sand in it though, that would ruin the beautiful hand laid wood and chrome bedliner!

Heh, I always imagined some guy going to a quarry with it asking for 250lbs of crushed stone... I mean, what did people expect to put in the back of that thing? Pillow cushins? Rose petals? It'd be a shame to wreck it with anything else.

I figured Michael Irvin would be the only customer..

It was 2 wheel drive? I didn't know that, what a hunk of junk for practical truck use.

With the money wasted on that Piece O' ****e, they could have brought back the solid front axle on all trucks!!!! Yeah, I want a mahogany bed??! Honey, let's go to home depot, wife: "Oh, ok, let's go!" "Well, can we take the Escort?!" Wife: "Why?". "I don't want to scratch up the bed!"
