What is IVD? How can I tell if my 96 Sport has it? I checked my switch and it's hot only when key is in ON position, not 24/7. I still plan to replace it though with a new one.

AFAIK, the 98s were the only ones with the switch hot 24/7. If the switch isn't hot with the key off, there's no need for a replacement switch unless it's leaking.

CERTAIN 1994-1996 MODEL YEAR BRONCO, 1994-2002 F-150 THROUGH F-550, 1997-2002 EXPEDITION, 1998-2002 NAVIGATOR, 2002 BLACKWOOD,1994-1996 E-150/250/350, 1996-2002 E-450, 2000-2002 EXCURSION, AND 1998 EXPLORER AND MOUNTAINEER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH SPEED CONTROL - SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM MODIFICATION. THE DEALER BULLETIN HAS BEEN POSTED TO FMCDEALER.COM
So, a quick trip to FMCDealer, and I found this:

Frank M. Ligon

August 3, 2006

TO: All U.S. Ford and Lincoln Mercury Dealers

SUBJECT: Safety Recall 05S28 - Supplement #8
Certain 1994-1996 Model Year Bronco, 1994-2002 F-150 through F-550, 1997-2002 Expedition, 1998-2002 Navigator, 2002 Blackwood,1994-1996 E-150/250/350, 1996-2002 E-450, 2000-2002 Excursion, and 1998 Explorer and Mountaineer vehicles equipped with Speed Control
Speed Control System Modification

REASON FOR SUPPLEMENT #8

The purpose of this supplement is to:

Announce that the affected vehicle population for this recall is being expanded to include additional vehicle lines and model years (under "Affected Vehicles", see "GROUP B: Supplement #8" below).
Revise the service procedure for vehicles exhibiting a leaking Speed Control Deactivation Switch (Labor Operation 05S28E).
Reemphasize the importance of properly drying and greasing the vehicle wiring harness connectors as directed in the Technical Instructions.
Provide claiming instructions for electrical grease.

2000 – 2002
Excursion

* Vehicles equipped with diesel engines are not affected.

REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL

The underhood Speed Control Deactivation Switch (SCDS) may overheat, smoke, or burn, which could result in an underhood fire. The potential for a fire exists regardless of whether speed control is being used or the engine is running.

SERVICE ACTION

At no charge to the vehicle owner, dealers are to:

Disconnect Speed Control Deactivation Switch wiring harness connector and check for presence of brake fluid contamination in the electrical connector on all affected vehicles.
If the Speed Control Deactivation Switch electrical connector is not contaminated with brake fluid: Install the Fused Jumper Harness.
If the Speed Control Deactivation Switch electrical connector is contaminated with brake fluid: Using compressed shop air, blow dry the Speed Control Servo electrical connector and the speed control switch harness connector. Apply electrical grease to the servo connector and to the speed control switch adapter jumper harness male pin connector. Install the Brake Repair Kit (Speed Control Deactivation Switch Kit).
They also have a copy of the owner letter, reimbursement procedures, and a background summary, but they're PDF files and I can't copy the text easily.

So, it looks like the official word is that it'll only be for the 98 Explorers and Mountineers with cruise control.

what about the people with the "pre-98" model.. that's technically a 97 but has features of a 98. i have the late 97 model and i wonder if they switched the cruise on my model as well..

I know that 96 has the same switch, so it still can leak. The only difference is that it is not hot 24/7, so I'll be there when the fire starts :) . If you have a voltmeter you can check the voltage across the sensor when engine is OFF. I plan to replace mine anyway, for a peace of mind.

The 97 lists it as being hot all the time as well. I can't say why it's not been included in the recall. It may be a matter of 'It's not included YET' or it may be a matter of 'they're not seeing the problems in the 96 for XXXXXX reason.' I have no way of knowing why they wouldn't include them. My best guess is that the fuse that's in-line is only a 7.5A on the 96, so maybe it was determined that the 7.5A fuse will blow before it becomes a fire hazard. I dunno... That's strictly supposition on my part.

If you have questions, you can contact the dealer and they can reference the VIN number to see if yours may be affected.

As I've said all along, it's not going to hurt anything to replace it.

My 97 schematic shows that it is only Hot In Run, not Hot At All Times.

My switch is leaking like a sieve and I lost cruise control a couple of weeks ago. Guess I'll be getting a new switch.

The manual says you should bleed the brakes after installing a new switch.

P.S. I park out in the driveway away from the house. Maybe I should reinstate my comprehensive insurance? :D

A while back I added a 1/2 amp fuse to the hot wire just above the connector for the switch. I'll probably go get the Ford part just to see how it's put together.

I like the fuse even with the newer switch, since you still have a similar part that could potentially fail. the real problem is that the circuit is always hot.

I think a fuse is a good idea even on the models that the circuit is 'hot while running'. After all, if the fire starts while driving down the highway, there's still the possibility of vehicle loss.

Whether running or parked, there's still a danger, in my humble opinion......

Yeah, but if you are moving down the road and you see smoke coming from under the hood, you can pop the hood open to try and blow it out. :p

As stated in the recall above, your 98 Explorer/Mountaineer will be included in the expanded recall.
