Ford remote keyless entry kit

I'm installing the Ford remote keyless entry kit in my 98 Sport, part #F7AZ-54220K51-AA.

I have everything wired up and working, except for the power door locks. The wiring chart that came with the kit is obviously giving me the wrong information.

Anyone out there have any experience with this particular kit?

It was around $150, but you can find other brands a lot cheaper. This was made by Code ALert, and sold under Ford's name.

Anyone who has installed an aftermarket remote keyless entry, could you please share your experiences, brand names, cost, effort?

I want to purchase one this weekend and install it.

Just saw your post, or I would have answered earlier. I got a kit from Performance Parts (www.performanceparts.com) and tried to install it in my '93 XLT. The catalog said if I had power door locks the remote entry kit was a simple plug-in. I followed the directions and the sucker didn't work, and then I found out that it's only a plug-in if you already have keyless entry (if I already had keyless entry, why would I be buying the kit?). Otherwise you have to cut and splice wires, which the customer service guy at Performance tried to talk me through (nothing in writing about it, apparently). I sent the kit back. It cost about $95 in '97 or '98. I solved the problem by trading my '93 in on a used '98 that had remote keyless entry factory-installed. It's a great option, and well worth the cost, I just didn't want to start muckin' about with the electrics.

I wish my '98 came with the keyless remote. I think I will go with the one from Ford for $150. I think it would be an easier install, and it will look like it came from the factory that way.

is that the key fob thing yall are talking about or the little keypad on the outside of the drivers door

It's the remote fob thing. I will need the entire kit, since my '98 didn't come from the factory with it, at least I dont think it did, I bought it used last year, and the dealer didn't give me any remote of any kind. I wonder if there is a way of telling if it has it or not.

you could goto the dealer and have them try to program a fob to your car.

I am sure that would work, but I bet they want to charge and arm and a leg for that. I could buy a fob off ebay for like 15 bucks. The dealer will want WAY more than that. Is there any way of telling besides that? Is there some hardware somewhere I could check for?

I've considered that. Even if it doesn't work, I am planning on getting the kit from the dealer, and would just have an extra fob. I would like to know what to look for to see if I already have the needed hardware.

Pack, do you have a keypad on the driver side door? If not, you can't just get a remote from ebay. You need to get a whole kit either from Ford or an aftermarket retailer. If you do have the keypad, get a couple of remotes from ebay and program it yourself. The programming is easy. Here are the steps:

1. Gather all your remotes

2. Shut all your doors and the liftgate glass

3. Put your key into the ignition and turn the key on, then off, for 8 times, ending in the "On" position. You'll hear the door locks lock and unlock. It's a confirmation telling you that you're in the programming mode.

4. Press any button on the remote. There will be a "lock-unlock" confirmation telling you that the remote has been programmed

5. Repeat step 4 if you are programming more than one remote.

Remember that when you program a remote, you need to program all other remotes because the RKE unit is assigning a new code to the remote. If you porgram only one remote, other remotes you have will not work for your truck. Hope this helps.
