Hello ALL! I'm Dan and I'm new to this forum. Just dropped in because I anticipate needing your help in my coming venture. I have an 89 Range that had a V6 long ago. I sent the motor out to be rebuilt 16 years ago and it was destroyed. The guy kept my money though ... and went out of business about 2 months later! Anyway, I've had the truck sitting all this time. My GROWN children want to get it back on the road for me. It was my father's truck when he died in 2000.
I have been "gifted" a 1998 Explorer XLS Eddie edition that has also sat for many years. it has the 5.0 I need but truck is all wheel drive. It likely has the transmission AND rear end that I need as well but I cannot tell.
QUESTIONS:
1- Is there an easy way to find out what transmission and rear end the vehicle has? Maybe a sticker some where like is in a GM glovebox with all the components listed?
2- Has anyone enjoyed the experience of swapping in a complete drive train as is in the Explorer into a Ranger?
3- What are the issues I need to be sure and check for on this vintage 5.0 / Trans combo - (when I find out the trans type)?
My plan is to relocate the Explorer to my place and try and get it running before I remove ANYTHING just to see if the gear is viable. This should not be too difficult.
4- Did these vehicles come with a security chip in the key? If so is there a work around? I don't care about the dash and stuff as I am going to scrap everything other than the drivetrain and associated wiring and computers.
5- Is there a GOOD place to list Explorer parts that I might salvage from this explorer?
Thanks in advance for your input and assistance in this HUGE project for me.
