Front differential bearing question!

I have a 2000 Awd ex with a front end noise that seems to be coming from where the passenger side cv joint goes into the differential housing. What I need to know is if there is a bearing or anything that holds the weight of the cv and the short shaft that goes into the pumpkin? That cv axle has a lot of play in it and when you spin the pinion, you can hear it clunking.

Did you end up replacing your carrier bearings? If so -- I am wondering if these can be pulled from the outside with a puller or if the diff needs to be removed.

Any advice?
