I really could use some help. Our trusty '00 Mounty has 140X and recently has begun a terrific vibration at 55mph plus. As I slow down to a stop it then morphs into metal clanking.

Strange thing is this happened a couple years ago. I remember being all freaked out that it might be the transfer case. Well the vibration/clanking went away and just reemerged.

The noise/vibration alternates on/off on winding roads as the weight of the vehicle shifts.

Noise/vibration is variable with speed.

Not dependent on drive vs. neutral.

I have replaced lower ball joints, tie rod, and upper control arms.

Drive shafts feel tight.

Feels/sounds like parts are going to fly out of the gear box as the synchronization becomes out of control. This is our last dependable car and I just started a new business. Please help!

Have you checked wheel bearings? Is the noise from the front or back?

BTW, you're posting your question in the 3rd gen section. You might get better, more accurate info if you post in the 2nd gen section. Guys there are very knowledgeable about your year of vehicle. Here's a link:
