I have a 1995 Explorer with 147,000 on it. I have a loud vibrating humming noise coming from the front end. It seems to be the passenger side. It starts at about 15mph, gets loud at 40mph, mellows out at 50mph and increases above 65 mph. On a hard right hand turn, it stops.

I've taken off both hubs and they sound "gritty" but are still tight. Bearings seem to be fine to me. The passenger side half shaft seems to wobble when the wheel is spun. Could my wheel hub be shot and causing the half shaft to wobble and make noise or should I concentrate on the front pumpkin bearings? There is some play in the shaft where it goes into the front pumpkin.

When parts are $150 a piece, I hate replacing parts if I don't have too! Any suggestions? I've read through post after post about the wheel hubs also.

You need new front wheel berrings. Replace them both.
