Fuel filter removal tool won't fit

It sounds like you have (had) the wrong filter on your truck.

The Ranger filter of that era was just like the Explorer filter except the Explorer filters had longer snouts (to allow the release tool to fit.) The Rangers used a different attachment mechanism, and didn't need the long snout. Other than the snouts, the two filters were identical.

Interesting. The new filter I got at autozone is identical to the one I removed. I wonder if they sell one filter for both vehicles?

I just checked. They list the same filter as applicable to both vehicles.

WIX lists two different part numbers - 33296 for the Explorer, 33097 for the Ranger.

I would go somewhere else to buy a filter if I were you.

That is why I use Motorcraft parts if at all possible.
