Can the filter be replaced without the ford tool, if so how much harder is it to do and what do you use instead?

With the tool the filter connections slides right out.
I guess you could gorilla it out and break all the retaining clips. Then how will you keep the replacement filter on?

The tool is very cheap. The hardest part is taking off the shield...lol

Thanks guys, just got one.. Let the fun begin:D

Well got the tool and now fought with it for a couple of hours and finaly put it back together again. The filter has a flat clip on one end ( like an electrical splice) and a large metal clip type thing with a small handle looking end. The metal side is the one I can't get off.

it's a PITA, that metal clip needs to swing off and out of the way, then you use the plastic half circles to slide up the line into the fitting and they depress the spring and the line pops off, it took me about 3 hours from start to finish the first time I did it, it really sucks, the location doesn't help matters either.

I think I used needle nose pliers to pull it up a bit.

that tool is crap, use a small screwdriver to unlock that pink plastic clip, a lot faster and less crap to fool with in such a cramped area

The tool has nothing to do with the plastic clip. It's for the spring clamp on the other side.
