Fuel Gauge

I've had my 2004 Explorer about a month now and haven't used it much yet. I did gas it up the other day, 18 gallons worth, but when I started the vehicle the fuel gauge didn't register. After driving around to a couple of places the fuel gauge came up very slowly. It stayed on a 1/4 then eventually went to 1/2 and finally went to full after about an hour. Any clue?

I've had the same problem with my '03 since it was new when I leave any door open while refueling.
