I have got 193,000 on my 97 with 5.0 and AWD. Is it worth cleaning fuel injector, or replace them? Also, any opinions on Fitch Fuel Catalysts?

I just changed my 4.0s injectors at 220k. AMAZING improvement. It is definitely worth cleaning or replacing them. Fuel injectors should be cleaned fairly regularly, I prefer to do it whenever I change plugs. At the age of your injectors, changing them may be meritorious, but probably not necessary. I only changed mine because I generally assume that vehicles are neglected before I own them.

FIND thanks for the info. I did find a place on the net that remanufactures injectors. They give the same warranty as new ones.. 24 months or 24,000 miles. $200, a brand new set is like $800. would you trust these?

You can get trustworthy ones much cheaper than that.

Here is a set, I have bought from this guy before, usually pretty quick shipping, and I have injectors in my truck right now from this guy.

Here is another set I ran across: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/86-9...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Here are cheap NEW oem replacements per e-bay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Fuel...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item53dbe2d171

Slightly more money on summit racing http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SMP-FJ78/

And finally rock auto lists a bunch of NEW injectors ranging from 30-75 bucks.

Reman or new, you can get them for half the price you were quoted or less.

I would take them to an injector shop for cleaning and testing. ( a diesel injector shop will do gas as well) They will tell you if any are bad, or weak. Not worth buying a new set for the old truck IMO.

Why not? My truck has over 220k miles on it, and I plan on making it last no less than 200k miles more.

Besides, if he is going to go through the trouble of pulling them, why not spend a little more.....

My theory has always been that as long as you can do the work yourself, fixing something old is always more cost effective than buying something new, and as an added bonus, keeping an explorer on the road (recycling) has a smaller environmental impact than manufacturing say, a Prius.

An injector shop will tell you if you even need new injectors. Most likley one or two are bad. You can buy used ones for $10. If your old ones are working fine, or can be made to work fine spending $800 on a new set is money wasted. I agree that if you can fix things yourself, you are way ahead of the game. In fact if you have an old vehicle fixing it yourself is the only cost effective way to keep in on the road.

The prices I gave him are as low as $15 a piece for a full set of reconditioned and flow matched injectors..... $119.99 shipped for a full set, and that comes with the added convenience of not having to drive anywhere to get anything while the injectors are out in case that is his only vehicle...... Besides, like I said, why not spend a couple bucks more and have the added security of new or freshly remanufactured, saving money down the road.

The highest price I gave him for brand new injectors is well below the $800 mark, many are under half that price.

FIND thanks man that helps a ton!!! My wife was crying about the other prices!! My Mechanic quoted me $130.00 to "Clean" them with some junk he hooks up to the fuel rail. Is this worth the $$$ Or would it be better to just get the other ones? He said in 15 years of service he has only changed 2 bad injectors from Ford. But changes a lot form Chevy. I mean $199.00 for 8, no core, and they will PAY you $30.00 for your old ones! MY math shows they now cost me $80 something bucks!! Also, any opinions on Fitch Fuel Catalyst? Either Inline or the drop ins?

WHOOPS that was $119 NOT $199! DER!

idk about fuel catalysts, I usually assume that stuff is snake oil and don't waste the money, they say up to $30 for the set, I wouldnt count on that for certain, but maybe, IDK, I havent sent them my old ones, kinda spaced it off.

BTW, glad I could help, I hate seeing people pay more than they have to. Lastly, just as an aside, cleaning injectors on the rails with that deal they hook up generally works REALLY well, and if it is done every few years, your injectors could last longer than you would ever believe. I just always err on the side of caution while dealing with parts that are over 15-20 years old that I dont know the maintenance history on.

Hey guys,
truck just hit 130k and Im looking at different options on the truck. I was thinking about doing the fuel rail cleaning method, but with so many miles and the cost you describe of fully remanned injectors, Id rather go that. I searched the ebay links posted above and I cant find the full set for $119? Can someone point me the way?

bump- any ideas?

wheres the fuel preasure shut off on a 2000 explorer? so i can change my fuel injector

relieve the pressure via the schraeder valve on the fuel rail. There is no way around spilling the fuel that is in the fuel rail. just dont breath too deep.
