More problems with my 91 hunk o ****. Still have the rough idle issue, ****TY gas mileage 10mpg, but now when the truck is hot it REAKS of fuel when I park it.

If I park and run into a store for 5 minutes I can smell gas BIG TIME and the truck BAIRLY runs till the temp gauge goes back down to "O" from like "M" or "A" on "NORMAL". It idles like its running on 3 cyl.

Remember I just spent $3000 putting a Motorcraft longblock into this POS. The new Long block has less than 1000 miles. I can't find a drop of gas leaking anywhere, but man can I smell it when the truck is warm.

1. Seafoam
2. TPS mod (if applicable), I see you have upgraded TB
2. Change of Spark Plugs and Wires
3. Make sure wires are hooked up right.
4. Make sure the fuel filter isn't leaking at all, it's under the driver side behind the front fender.
5. Make sure there isn't a slight exhaust leak before the cats, might be fuel smell
6. Don't trust temperature gauge, it isn't accurate. It's really just "cold, normal, and hot".

Do all of these, and if nothing helps, we can keep narrowing it down. Also make sure the MAF sensor is hooked up. This might sound strange, but how are you parking? With my Explorer, if I park it so it's heading downhill, I'd get the gas smell a little bit, but when I park it as if going uphill, no smell.

Have you checked the fuel pressure regulator? If the diaphragm in it is blown, you will have crappy mileage, poor performance, sooty exhaust and a fairly strong odor of fuel. Quick and dirty way is to pull the vacuum line off the fpr and check it for fuel. If there's fuel in the vacuum line, the fpr needs to be replaced.

Everything but the MAF, TPS, Coil Pack, and PCM have been replaced in the last 6 months. This thing has been a POS money pit of epic proportions.

Here is a list of new parts in the last 6 months
Engine Long block
Spark Plugs
Plug Wires
Water Pump
Radiator Fan
Fan Clutch
Radiator
Thermostat
Alternator
Starter
Battery
Air Filter
Fuel Filter
IAC
02 Sensor
Exhaust "Y" Pipe
A/C compressor, Orifice Tube, Accumulator

Parts Hot tank Cleaned when engine was installed Less than 1000 miles ago
Oil Pan
Valve Covers
Upper and Lower Intake Manifolds.
Timing Cover

No gas in FPR vacuum line. I took the plugs out and they are WHITE.
I put a SECOND new set of FACTORY FORD Lower, and Upper intake gaskets 2 weeks ago after pulling off the manifolds to check for warpage.

I think the fuel smell it coming from the vapor canister. Could it be full of fuel from overfilling the tank? It stinks of fuel BAD on that side of the underhood compartment.

Can I safely bypass the canister to see If that fixes my problems???

Are you talking about the box with the charcoal in it? If so, I read somewhere else on this site you can. All it's suppose to do is trap fumes in it or of hte like, and help with starting. I'd imagine that if disconnected, it might take a split second longer to start. It's always worth a try

...Josh, you either have a bad seal, cracked fuel filler hose, or recovery hose at the tank...

Thanks tbars, that might help figure out why when I fill up to when it clicks, i'll get fuel splashing on teh ground. as of right now i run it close to empty, and put 15 gallons in.
