I have a '98 Explorer XLT - (5.0L V8 Engine). I've recently been having problems with starting the car. Example, I drive, park the car go into a store and when I come up the car starts barely and sputters out. Its weird because it happens intermittently. It usually starts back up after a few turns of the key but this last time it didn't. So I took it to our local mechanic (walking distance from house) and they took a look at it. At first they couldn't get it to act up again, but I insisted something was wrong, so they took it for a drive and made the mistake of turning it off a distance away from their shop. I've never been so happy to hear it wouldn't come back on ... lol. So they ended up pushing it back to their shop. Diagnosis: I need a new fuel pump. I was hoping using some Techron would be cool but they said nope new fuel pump.
My question is this: The mechanic told me that Ford put 4 different fuel pumps in the '98 Explorers. He told me they wouldn't know which one it was until they dropped the fuel tank and took out the fuel pump. So I'm looking at a repair bill of $330 - $500 (Labor included $190), depending on which fuel pump it is. Is this true? Is there no way to know which fuel pump I have unless they drop the tank?
Any help would be most appreciated!
