so I searched and found some information... additionally I had a separate post on the vacuum octypus... but now I am thinking that both problems are some how related...

Heres the symptoms:
1) some, not alot, of raw gas on top of tank
2) vacuum cap on octypus popped off 2 times
3) slight, faint smell of raw gas... not all the time, just occasionally
4) gas mileage is not as good as it was before these symptoms... was originally 17-19 mpg and now is closer to 15 - 16 mpg
5) idles ever so slightly rougher than it did a few months ago

No gas leaks under the hood... no other symptoms... can't find any other problems

ANYONE? Any suggestions???

Can you tell if the gas is coming from where line(s) meet the fuel pump metal connectors? I doubt if the tank has a hole in the top of it, so it's probably got something to do with the lines or fuel pump assembly. My 92 had the same problem and one of the connectors on the fuel pump has a rust hole in it. Had to put a new fuel pump assembly in it. If you have to pull the fuel pump, be careful disconnecting the lines. Those are high pressure lines and not readily available should you bust one.

Had similar issues about a month ago with my ex. Turned out the sending unit in the tank had rust holes in it. Replaced and all is better. Carquest had the sending unit/fuel pump assembly cheaper than advance wanted for just the sending unit.
