I've noticed that after I turn off speed control, the gas pedal becomes hard to press. The only way to fix it is to break it free and push it as close to the floor as possible - obviously that can be dangerous. I am not sure what is causing this, but I like using speed control, so I'd like to fix it. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Couple of things:
- The bracket holding the gas pedal is riveted to the firewall; those rivets can break and the bracket twist. Eventually, it will come off. There is a TSB on this; when it happened on mine I just drilled some holes in the bracket and bolted it back in place.
- The cable itself can get sticky and hang up. When you inspect the bracket, squirt some WD40 forty or equivalent on the cable where it attaches to the pedal - try to get the WD40 into the end of the cable.
- Take off the plastic cover over the throttle linkage on the engine and lub both the accelerator and cruise cables where they attach to the throttle.

Also check the throttle body butterfly for build up. Use throttle body cleaner only. DO NOT use carb cleaner.

I'll check these out. Do you guys happen to have any pictures of these things? I'm still relatively new to this, so I'm not sure where everything is located.

Thanks! In the meantime, I'll go searching for similar threads.

Sorry, no pics - but my two are really easy to find.
- Push drivers seat all the way back, look under the dashboard for bracket behind/slightly above the accelerator pedal attached to the firewall. Above bracket you will see where accelerator cable goes thru firewall.
- You didn't say what engine you had, but you should have two cables in the engine compartment running to the throttle body (just behind tube from air cleaner). They may be under a plastic cover that unsnaps. One is the accelerator cable, the other is the cruise control cable. Both do the same thing - move the throttle. On my 5.0L V8, looking at the throttle from the front of the car, the accelerator cable is on the left. Good luck.

My year of mountaineer only comes as a 5.0L V8, sorry I assumed that was known. :(

Thanks, I'll take a look at these when I get home.

Bracket looks fine.

I sprayed some WD40 on the accelerator cable, and I'll see if that fixes it tomorrow. If not, I did try looking for the cables in the engine compartment, but couldn't find them. If this doesn't fix it, I'll do a more thorough search later.
