Gas tank locking tabs are rotted out on first gen tank. I wanted to try to remedy this without purchasing a used tank, since new replacements have been discontinued for some time now.
I have an astro rivet nut riveter.
Astro Riveter
I bought some rivet nuts from grainger that are closed ended so gas can not get in the threads. Part # 33JF60
I ordered buna-n rubber from McMaster-Carr part # 86715K469 for the gasket. Buna-N from my research is oil resistant and holds up to gas well.
The rusted out tabs got cleaned up and 4 of them removed because they were swelled so much. The metal piece protrudes to the inside of the gas tank. My dad bought a plastic welder iron and filled in the areas where the metal was. It turned out pretty nice.
I installed the rivet nuts.
