so I was pulling parts for my 4406 swap and I pulled the gas skid plate and noticed the strap had rusted through and was NOT holding the tank in place.

as far as I can tell the strap is part of the cross member and will be extremely difficult to replace.

is there a trick I'm missing?

should I just ratchet strap it in place?

or is the skid enough to hold it? (it obviously has been)

I have it jacked at the moment, but will be ratchet strapping it until I can unbolt the front bolts and lower the tank

anybody have a god fuel tank removal how to?

I need to remove the lines from the top of the tank so I can get it out of the way

Gas tank strap is easy to remove/replace...

The strap has a tapered end that fits into the notch on the crossmember you referred to...When you remove the old pieces, take the new strap, turn it sideways, insert the non bolt end into the crossmember notch, then rotate it to bolt it into place...

If you already have the truck supported and have enough clearance, you can remove the 2 front bolts after removing the skid plate[if you have one], then pulling the power connector on the drivers rear wheel frame rail and the fill/vent hoses from the back of the tank before sliding the tank backwards and lowering it from the truck...After lowering the tank you can then remove the fuel lines and the pump if you need to do so...

This is a picture of the tank strap...http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_Fuel-Tank-Strap-Spectra-Premium_20370188-P_2160_R%7CGRPFUE2AMS_753260322___

PARTS ORDERED

will take 5 days... still working on those tank connections, they arent fun

Which ones are being a problem?

The green vent line needs to be squeezed together and pulled off...The supply and return lines are probably going to be tight but if you use aluminum tools they will come apart easier...

And don't forget to spray some white lube into them to make them easier to re-connect and remove the next time..

there thats the advice i was looking for squeeze the vapor line!!

thank you!

damn spring release tools dont fit!

the cheap plastic ones do, but they dont work well

now I have a half dozen different tools and their receipts... we will see which can deliver!

I always had good luck with the aluminum disconnect tools...

I used the red one for the filter and the gold one for the supply lines on my 99 X...If you have an Explorer with a return fuel line it will be smaller than the supply line...Don't forget to push the fitting in with the tool on the line then pull out to seperate it...

This is the set I bought a couple of years ago...http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=96834
