Hi all
Here is my job review:
Symptoms:
Leaking rear axle shaft seal
Actions:
1.rear bearing hub to be taken apart and checked for noise, runout or rust.replace if detected
Use any suitable impact gun to take the axle nut apart.do not try to remove the axle nut with hand tools only.
2.Take the trailing arm apart and replace the bushing if needed.make sure the bushing offset dimension are approximated 7mm .the inner surface needs to be cleaned and the new bushing should be loctited with 638 or similar.then wait approx 24 hour to the adhesive final curing step . Clean and paint the whole arm if needed.
Take the cv joint apart and replace cv joint boots and cv joint grease if needed.use strap boot band or oetiker 105 and 41.5 mm OEM bands
Do not reuse cv joint splines locking ring.
Use axle shaft removing tool.
Dont forget cv joint tripod locking ring install
Make sure the tripod installed in the same orientation.
3. Use slide hammer to remove the old axle seal and the bearing.make sure not to scratch the seal surfaces:
Measure the exact pilot bearing location (there no stopper behind the bearing).use axle nut socket to install the pilot bearing.
4. Remove the needle bearing from the axle:
5. Replace the bearing and the seal.use original ford axle seal installation tool and improvised 25 inch extension.two person job.seal to axle case gap to be checked with 0.25mm gauge filler.
5. Install as per Ford 8.8 youtube instructions.torque everything to specs (wheels on the ground height except of the axle nut ).do not reuse suspension fasteners if no threadlocker used.parking brake to be adjusted.
Axle nut installation tip:
With the car wheel out of the hub, apply parking brake or the regular brake (if the caliper installed already) and torque to 275NM.
Clean the threads as possible before the installation.
Do not assemble the wheel until the axle nut retorqued to specs.
