Glen's 96 XLT

This is my 96 Explorer D.D. slow moving project, was bought in September of 07. XLT model which is like XLS model, power windows/mirrors and that's it.

Mods:
Removed the running boards
Brown-Wire-mod but have swapped in a 97 GEM so I don't drain my battery anymore. And have disconnected the plug under my hood to have a "live" axle type setup for now until a locker is installed and until I decide when to put a manual t-case in. (manual case in now) 4-29-11
33" tires
4.88 G2 Gears
Swapped in different hvac controls.

Sony Headunit
Boss 1200W Class D Mono Amp
Pioneer 12" 1200W Sub for a little bass

I plan to have it a little more off-road capable nothing extreme just enough to be able to tackle some descent trails and be a descent truck on the highway.

Here she is. :)

Well today 3/9/10 is a really nice day so decided to finally remove that bumper valance so it looks better and gives a better approach.

3/25/10 Decided to lift it a little.

I finally had enough of the blue bezel and only did that temporarily and never replaced or repainted and its not a ricer so I decided I wanted black again (for now) so went to the junk yard and got a 99XL bezel so that the 4wd panel matched what it actually is now 6/4/10

Airplanes are held together with rivets. They aren't pop rivets, but they are rivets.

So since I love the Explorer so far I just plan to stick with'er. The alignment I got back in November seems to have worked its way a little bit so will have to get that tended to. But the steering wheel is slightly sloppy and was like that before and after the rack, could it be the ujoint in the steering shaft? Would be nice to get it tight like new :)

there are aftermarket universal upgrades out there with a real u-joint too, although come to think of it im not sure if ours had rag joints or u-joints

Just a little update for any y'all that isn't on FB, I put Raybestos Pro Grade Poly rack bushings in the truck and got her some new treads. And ripped out a rebuilt spare 4R55E for $100.00 just in case I can't find a V8 swap before this trans dies, but still wanting to do the 5spd swap too but the ole 4.0 is lacking power these days...

Tires, even with brand new, I still have no rubbing except for the frame when at full lock.

Tranny donor, took around an hour to remove.

What tires are those and what size are you running?

Good luck with the swap!

They're 33X12.50's Mud Claw. I'm going to try replacing the o2 sensors, and a magnaflow direct fit cat setup and see if it regains its power, it does have a 194k but my 95 that's had 215k on it had more power than this truck. Good to see you back in an Explorer Todd :p:

Explorers....what can I say? Are they bad off road?....Nope, still out there impressing Jeep guys with what it can do :) These tires are doing great, went on a trail in the mountains Friday night while it was raining and it gripped the rocks great. And even though its not a show truck, I took the time and painted the rear pillars on the hatch because the faded gray was ugly to look at anymore. I've also had a CEL for the purge valve on the charcoal canister and when I looked underneath the Explorer one of the lines to the fuel tank 5 inches worth of steel line was gone, rusted that bad, so I bought 1/2 inch rubber line 2 feet of it and cut the metal off to the plastic line connecting to the fuel tank...problem solved there for now...

Well the Explorer did great out wheeling on Sunday, did a little more harder stuff than usual and impressed a few folks, I didn't need pulled at all :D hopefully get some pics from folks then.

In the past couple months, I've replaced all three O2 Sensors, plugs/wires, PCV Valve, fixed EGR leak, fuel filter, rear shocks and I'm sure I'm forgetting something...

fueltank_zps18bc0acc.jpg

Got another tank for the truck yesterday, poor truck has been sitting in one place practically for over a month now....

This weekend has tested the love and bond a truck and man can have....I finally went to replace the fuel tank, the fuel pressure sensor on both tanks broke! Kris G helped me out with naming the part because I had no idea what the sensor was. Disconnecting the filler lines and fuel pump lines was a royal PITA. I hooked the replacement tank up, buttoned it all back up, went to start it and massive fuel leak again, but not from the tank this time....this time the fuel pump lines decided to fray and break, so I took Simon L.'s advice and just cut off at the aluminum fuel rails and put rubber hose in the place of the braided lines....

Now that the tank was in and no longer leaking it seemed as if the rear hard brake line along the axle was leaking because it was wet :fire: got a new one at autozone, the threads on the new brake line wouldn't work after I already had bent it to shape...took it back and had to get a longer line because I had taken the last short one so I had to put an S in the line to make it work under my truck....once the new brake line was replaced, my buddy went to pump the brakes so I could bleed the lines and now the brake line going along the frame rail is squirting like mad by the fuel tank! :fire:

I've certainly had enough with this truck....the rust under it is beyond belief these days....unfortunately I love this truck too much to just get rid of it otherwise I would probably replace it with a WJ....I don't have the time for that long brake line along the frame rail or the patience to deal with the truck in general right now, so I think I'm going to have a guy that I know that owns and operates his own garage, may have him replace the line so I can get the truck on the road more quickly. Plus he has the luxury of putting it in air on a lift...what a hellacious weekend, there was no relaxation this weekend...
