Going through water..

So, with a 95 and up is crossing water a bad idea? Can you do it safely

As has been said, the intake and driveline breathers are the main issues. I frequently went through water over my bumper without problems, but my intake, tranny, and diff were all modified. I also made sure that any electrical accessories, especially those in and below the bumper (lights, wires, etc) at least had a decent coating of grease at the joints; and preferably were well sealed.

Oh, I did cook my front wheel bearings after going through water and then not checking them. All the grease had washed out and they blew a few weeks later.

What about the doors, not that it's a hugh concern, i mean carpet does dry, but do they keep out water, i know they are sealed, but it doesn't seem too tight.

As long as you keep moving and your seals are in decent shape you shouldn't have a problem. The rear hatch is much more of a problem than the doors (if you stop or move backwards).

Ok, so I've read how to move the breather lines, and take care of the bearings...but what about the intake? I've never heard of it sucking air in under the fender (thought it does make sense) and I've never read of people having to modify it....short of putting on a snorkel, what is required for that?

what happens when the wheel bearings go i've gone through water crossings a $hit load of times and never check my bearings

what can i check?? and what would I have to replace.

also i've gone throught some deep water above my 33 inch tires for sure. and probobly just about bottom of my head lights no water inside that i've noticed

i drilled my airbox that helps too. and extended my breathers.

Keeping in mind that we never see floods and i don't really do any crazy waer crossings, i just extended my lines up to the level that my rims top off at, which is about 24", which really I think is sufficent to get me though any common flooded road or light stream, but i have my cone filter brackted at the highest possible postion under the hood, inthe corner there, so if i HAD to, i suppose i could go up to just above my bumber, which is about 36" or so...

and you should always go slowly through water right?

no just blast it

this water was shallow maybe 5-6 inches.

I'd dasy keep decent amount of foward momentum 5-10mph. should be good. you if real deep don't get off the gas and keep enough speed so if it hydrolocks you can coast through most of it with momentum.

I was looking around at some Hummer H! sites, and their stock fording depth is 24", or 30-" witht he disel...not bad considering with 33" tires and minor breather adjustments, i can do 24"...of course i knwo the hummer is simply amazing, but i'm sure with 37" we'd be pretty good as well.
