Sup everyone,

I have decided to replace the tensioners on my 98 SOHC next weekend. I have read the thread above and have written down all the numbers and will be buying them next week. I do have a couple of questions for those that have completed this.

Did you replace the chains or just the guides and tensioners?
-- If didn't do the chains, are you regretting it now or is everything still good? I can't see the chains stretching that much, but just want to be sure.

Is there anything else that you would recommend before I rip into it.... i.e. front crank seal, water pump, t-stat?

I talked with the Ford dealer and they quoted me about 500-600 to complete the job. To me that doesn't sound correct if they are replacing all the chains. I am confident that I can do the tensioners and guides myself, just weary about the cams moving so that is why I am asking about the chains being reaplaced.

Anyone around the Sacremento area that would like to help...lol... beer and burgers would be on me...

Thanks in advance!

Jeremy

I would definitely replace the cam seals and consider the chains while in there. I suspect the dealer quote may have just been labor. There is no way that would have included the chains.

camshaft timing tool?

Do you have the camshaft alignment/timing tool?

Don't rotate the engine backwards (counter-clockwise) with the worn guides because the chain can slip on the gears and get out of time. If the camshaft is far enough off alignment the pistons can hit the valves and bend them.

x2 on that. just effed a motor that was running because of that!

Nope but I might see if I can rent one from the local parts store. IF I decide to do it... still undecided about having the dealership do it, I want to make sure we are talking the same language... like said earlier, the price quote doesn't match up.
