Why do you shift it into Neutral?

I don't think that it will hurt anything, but modern auto transmissions are designed so that you can leave them in D while waiting at a stoplight.

When waiting for someone, it is probably better to shift into P because you don't have to worry about the truck rolling if you remove your foot from the brake pedal. Functionally P and N are the same except for the engagement of the parking pawl in P.

I get irritated when people shift into neutral at stop lights. The light changes and it always seems to take them by surprise. They then have to get shifted and rolling instead of just smoothly following the person in front.

For some reason a lot of people do that in Louisville, and we have some of the worst stoplight practice in the nation.

It won't hurt a thing to sit in D while at a light. Stopping for a longer period of time -- sure -- put it in P. Relax. Like over the weekend on the wheeling trip. Often times while waiting for the trucks in front to conquer an obstacle, I could sit in gear with my foot on the brake, or I could just park it, and watch... No heating of the tranny, no wear on the brakes, no-brainer for that sort of wait... Stop lights? Just be ready to head it out...

I dont put it into N, I put in into 1st and get ready to move :p:

I have a feeling you do this:

You put it into neutral at a light, the light turns green, and you have the tendancy to push on the gas and shift into drive at the same time (subconciously), thus slamming the tranny into gear. This is not exactly healthy for the tranny.

So what is your logic for shifting into neutral?

I used to do that because my idle would stumble while in drive, especially after I got off the interstate. I cleaned the IAC and dont have that issue anymore. Other than that, there is no reason to put it in neutral.

i used to go to newtral becase i just can`t stand my car trying to pull and i'm pushing the brakes to stop doing that.

i choose newtral instead of parking because newtral is closer to D and yes i propably have a very slow acceleration time which make some people angry waiting for me to go in D and when i feel that the transmission engaged then i leave the brakes.

i don`t have a tranny temperature, but sitting 1 minute with the tranny trying to pull you and you push the brakes at the same time it just feel wrong for me.

thanks for your input
