Hello All!
I have used this forum in the past to search for repair solutions and found it very helpful. This forum and parts resources like Rock Auto will reduce your cost of ownership due to repairs.
I have owned a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer 4.0 for over 10 years now and at 135,000 miles it needs overhead cam chain tension parts.
The motor runs but makes a clacking sound like playing cards on the spokes of a bicycle.
I was told my many repair shops that these motors were not rebuildable and an exchange motor was the only way to go at $4,500 or more.
I found a mechanic shop on Craig's list under Auto Repairs section advertising specifically to rebuild Ford 4.0 motors.
He said he would R & R the motor, replace all cam chain parts on both sides for no more than $1,600. That also includes pulling the pan, checking lower bearings, pulling the heads, checking valves and replacing the lifters.
The moral of this story is shop around till you find the right deal.
He asked me how did I get 135,00 miles out of the original tensioners?
Mobil 1, 10-30 W, son!
