Grinding Noise in Left Front???

97 explorer sport

My 97 explorer has been also making a rubbery grind kind of like a flat tire as well. My mechanic says it's a bad front differential however I have looked all over it and cannot find the gear ratio on it. It's a 4.0 2-door sport. Also If someone could tell me where to get parts or a differential that would be greatly appreciated.

Did anyone find the solution to this problem? Sounds like the same problem I am having but turning to the right. Took everything apart, tested everything that was talked about in this post. And still have the noise but do not know where it is coming from.

I have the same noise when turning to the right. It is much much worse when reversing with the steering turned to the right. I was thinking it was the CV joint, but after reading this thread i'm not sure its that now. Could it be anything to do with the hub???

Sorry did not post sooner. It was the lower right ball joint. But also did the right upper control arm(with ball joint) and the left side too (upper and lower). And tie rod ends. A lot quieter now. But after the right lower the noise was gone. Hope this helps.

My husbands 2002 mountaineer is making a similar grinding noise, seems like from the front drivers side. He noticed that there is also some black residue of some kind, we assume from the tire??? Any ideas? This car has been giving us nothing nothing but trouble the past few months!!

My 98 sport does it left side only in reverse hard lock

Find the fuse for electromagnetic clutch engaging 4x4 high (front driveschaft). take it out and try to drive. If the problem gone than you have something to do with the transfer case
I have a 99 explorer sport. I'm in the owners guide but can't see this fuse. Is it the tranfer case relay? Power train control module?

I've had my 2000 Explorer Sport for about 10 months now and pretty much since the day I got it, it makes this horrible grinding noise in the wheel well. It is on the driver's side and only happens when I turn sharp to the left. We've replaced front axles, lower ball joint and tie rod end, but no luck yet!! Anyone ever have this problem and came up with a solution??? HELP!!
Problem solved it's not the front end it only sounds like it mine was the rear drum brake shoe was gone and I replaced it now she is driving like new
