I had a chance to dive into the NEW to me Explorer. I found the diagnosis matrix that gijoecam posted very helpful.

I found the CV joint on the front driveshaft had a torn boot, & very sloppy. Obviously from not having any grease in it. fells worn out
Is there a rebuild kit for this CV?

Also, the bushing that anchors the front diff on the passenger side seems soft, as well as, lets the diff move front to back. Has anyone replaced this bushing? Whose replacement part works the best?

Thanks,
NT

So, I have had a chance to dig into the new to me 1998 Explorer.

1. the CV style U-joint at the transfercase was toast, That is what was causing all of the noise etc. A local drive shaft shop will cut the CV part off & make a retrofit double cardan style(?) & new front ujoint set up pretty reasonable....

2. the drive shaft, when it started binding, it was causing the front diff to move.

3. the front diff bushings are pretty tight, with some help, I tried moving (flexing) them, there are good.

4. the Front sway bar end links are what looks to be Super Lift units. The end link bushings are gone. I am going to call Super lift & see if I can order them. this is what was probably causing the clanking noise....

Hey, welcome to the site.

Sounds like you have things figured out there. The first gens have a double cardan front drive shaft.

Thanks.

It was a process to sort it out.
