UPDATE: I will leave my first description of the problem intact below, but I believe I have a better idea of what is happening, just no explanation of why.
I had a friend listen to the car with the hood up while I started it and let it run for as long as it would. What he and I both saw is that after the car runs for about 3 seconds, the clutch on the A/C compressor seizes, and the engine dies. This seems to be the source of the noise and the smell. My A/C stopped working sometime between summer 2008 and spring 2009, so I am used to not having this. My hope is to not have to replace the whole compressor, because that could get expensive. Any thoughts on how I might determine if this is limited to the compressor's clutch, and if so where I might get a replacement part as well as instruction on how to replce it?
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION
About a week ago my Explorer ('93 XLT, 5-Spd manual) started making a loud groaning noise while I was driving. I was only a few blocks from home when it started, so I continued home, and haven't actually driven anywhere since. As of June of this year I've only driven my explorer once a week on average. When I start the car now, it starts up fine, then after a few seconds it begins the groaning noise, and promptly shuts down. This occurs while idling (in neutral). If I stay in neutral but give it some gas, the car keeps running, but the groaning persists; as soon as I let off the gas the car shuts down. I am able to shift smoothly, and even backed up and went forward to make sure I could drive if I had to...I can, but the car makes the groaning noise (loudly) the whole time. The part that troubles me (other than the groaning) is that as I let the car run I can smell what smells like burning metal. I had my slave cylinder replaced about 3 years ago, same with the starter, the car has a small oil leak (add a quart every couple mos.), other than those things it runs pretty well all of the time. I know very little mechanically, but can do, and will try, easy remedies/checks on my own. Your thoughts re my situation are greatly appreciated.
