Was wondering if there waqs anyone out there who could assist me in installing my b&m hammer shifter. I have a 2000 ford explorer XLT and this is the first modification i am going to do. I started pulling out the center console, ran into a bunch of wires and metal, anyone maybe help dissasembling this as well? I know i am asking alot, have to run before you can walk sometimes right? Any input would be appriciated, i.e. cutting drilling, column shift dissasembly, wireing, anything. THANK YOU, this site rocks, hopefully I can assist with things in the future, just recently started getting my hands dirty, newbie to everything mechanical, electrical, maitenence lol. THANK YOU. - Matt:thumbsup::salute:

What good is a hammer shifter going to be on an electronically controlled transmission? How's the shifter going to interface with the PCM that controls the trans?

Asthetic purposes, bought it to install on my 84 K5 blazer but engine blew, figured id just throw it on my explorer cause I like the way it looks, no purpose otherwise.

I mean all im doing is moving the shifter from the column to the floor, its just more comfortable for me that way, drive with me left hand on the steering wheel and right hand is always ghost shifting, been used to floor shifters, would like to install. Is it not possible? I know i am over simplifying but I have seen it on a few explorers, one in particular on here.

So it's just for looks?

wouldnt mind being able to ratchet through the automatic gears, not just for looks, bad excuse, but I am eventually going to be turning this into a off roading champ, mid rock crawling, pretty much trying to relive my blazer through the explorer, moving the modifications i was going to do on the blazer to the explorer, to each his own. Id love to swap it for a 5 speed, but thats not gonna happen, figured id do the next best thing.

I think this is a very worthwhile project. I think a center console shifter would be very unique. I've often thought about trying to figure out how to integrate a shifter off an Aviator for example. Lots of possibilities. But there are some challenges too. Like how to get the steering column to operate correctly. I can't imagine electronics would be any issue at all since they are all located on the trans themselves and nothing on the shifter other than the OD button which can be easily moved. That should be a non issue.

My single biggest hurdle would be the skills necessary to make a nice, professional looking console. I have no skills in that area and would have to have it done for me...which would be very spendy I'm sure. But if you can do that, this should be a very slick project when done.

If my memory serves, the UK or Aussie right-hand-drive Explorers had a console shift at some point in time... I remember seeing pics on this site a while back. Maybe one of the down-under members can shed some light on it?

I appriciate the feed back, I actually have already made fiberglass door panels and a center console is now in the works, will get pictures up soon as i can, I was talking to a gentleman over at checker autoparts and he said this wouldnt be overly easy, but definitely something i can do myself, Id like to read up on it more though. Ran into a bunch of wires running under the center cosole, are these all just for the tuner unit on the back of the center console? Thanks for you input guys.

I think you better remove the column first to figure out what's involved -- cauz its a bit more complicated.

And while you are there, think about the placement of the shifter because personally, I would prefer a shifter that is more forward and higher (like a desert truck setup) like this:

Hm, that is a thought, I think I might like it more on the floor, or where the cup holders used to be, speaking of which i am havin trouble dissasembling the center console as it is, i dont want to break anything, anyone know how to go about after i have the coin tray and cupholders removed?

Wow Dan thank you very kindly sir, i am curious as to why i could not find that myself. You are a gentleman and a scholar sir. -Matt

Hey guys, BM Hammer Shifter is here, Still need help on the install, No clue what so ever, would really like to avoid having it taken in and done by someone, feel like they would charge me out the ass. Ive read the instructins, I guess a good place to start would be to figure out what transmission I have, Its a 2000 XLT 4.0, anyone know the stock transmission on that bad boy? secxondly, it has overdrive, so im pretty sure i need to buy a kit for that as well. PLEASE! SOMEONE MUST KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!!! THANK YOU!
