Hangs in 3rd gear

1997 SOHC Ltd Explorer auto.

I just had this transmission swapped in and it often, but not always, sticks in 3rd gear.
Usually I select 2 and it will shift then I can put it back into D and it's ok.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a shift solenoid and/or clutch pack issue. God are those transmissions ####ing garbage...

Any idea what can be done about it?

It seems to happen more when the trans is fully warmed up.

Also, the VSS isn't connected yet, is that relevant?

It would have to be opened up and looked at. I just know these transmissions like going through clutch packs and solenoids.
