My explorer had been leaking a small amout of coolent and I decided to bring it in because I did not see the exact place of the leak. Had a pressure test done and they concluded it was the head gasket, they quoted me just under 1000 for parts, labor, and tax. They said in all likleyhood it is not a cracked head but the gasket but would not know until they had it off...

does this sounds like a good price considering the labor involved?
I wish I could tackle this myself but do not have the time or the space with being at school.
The explorer is a 94 with 140,000 miles.

Seems like a ballpark estimate. Just make sure that a first rate established repair shop does the work. Did they talk about having the head redone while the head is off? Change gaskets and such? Replace plugs, wires, etc. while doing the job? Is the vehicle of sufficient value to drop a grand into? And, sometimes the job becomes even more expensive once it is under way and more issues arise. Will a tranny job be needed next month? These are all issues that only you can answer. Good Luck

ballpark estimate seems right.. im currently working through a replacement of the single head gasket on my toyota truck with a 4cyl.... are the going to do both sides? as you have 2 heads, not just one... also are they going to deck the head? install new head bolts? employ a new top end rebuild kit? becasue there is going to be tons of gaskets needed... what about a valve job? pressure test and vacumn test the head?

they were going to have the heads sent to their machine shop and have them tested...other wise I was told the price included the head gasket set and labor. They have a 12 month 12,000 mile warantee on all work preformed. The gasket is OEM.
