heads are off and reserved me a surprise!

Thanks JD, Im thinking about the 422 but I wanna do most of the work myself. I have the heads off right now, prob. best if I take them to a shop though. Is the 422 really worth all the extra expense?

O with out a doubt!!its not much more, maybe $60 in machine work and the 988 dual springs arent much more than stock springs.power increase is a world of difference tho!!

If your going 411, might as well go 422 if the heads are off anyway.
I wish I would have done it.

The cam profile on the 422 doesn't have any more overlap than the 411, its just more of a square lobe (Thats why you need the dual rate springs).

Why comp cams says its no good to use it with an automatic is surprising. I see no evidence of vacuum issues, or anything in the specs of the cam, and people who have installed it have had no issue either.

I say go 422. Then I can be jealous of another person

You mean 410 but yes the 422 is the only way to go.i think its more of an idle issue with autos

FYI - i originally ordered a head from Alabama but they apparently were on back order and cancelled without informing me. So I went ahead and bought from King Cylinder heads.

whichever you choose it does not really matter because BOTH alabama and king all parts from a vendor -maybe the same maybe not-, assemble and ship to you. Don't know if they lap the rings though.

Either way the Kings came out of a plant in California, been a while but it seemed like you could order directly from the actual manufacturer for about $50 less.

What are the disadvantages of running 422 cams?
The stock power was fine to me, gets up the mountains just fine.
I do a lot of highway driving between 75 and 80 in hot weather (90-100F).
Gas mileage is a concern as well. I got as high as 23mpg at 65mph.
I drive under 3k rpm's and shift between 1 and 2 unless on a hill.

About 20-30 more hp;)

I could deal with that drawback I think!
I'm looking for things such as: idle issues, detonation, decreased mpg, increased emissions and such.

If your worried about that stuff,a cam is not for you.but to answer you questions,(422)idle does have to be set alittle higher with an auto, there is no detonation(that would happen wit higher compression and low octane gas,ie-95tm heads and 89 or lower gas)mpg would probably increase if you could stay out the gas and there is an increase in emisions(neither will pass a sniffer test)410 may with new aftermarket cats

If you still want to do a cam, you might want to look at a cam from delta cams.
I did see a power increase (Its like the 410 cam), but not like JD saw with his 422 cam.

With the delta cam (Its very inexpensive at under $100.00, as its a re-grind) you don't need dual springs on your heads. There are no emissions issues, no idle issues, nothing like that.

The delta cam is an upgrade, with no down side (Other than not making the power that you could make). Just don't go with the F40 kit by delta cams. My experience with it is that the rocker's are too soft. So, sealed power rockers(Or Ford), slightly longer push rods from smith brothers (Id have to look up the length) and the Delta cam.

Or, if power has never been an issue for you, leave the stock cam in, and just fix the head issue.

Help Please - guidance and advice

This is not true.the seller in those links sell assembled heads also.the reason i post for bare heads is because i recommend you replace your valves with SI one piece stainless steel portflow valves and also if you do a cam its recommended you run 988 dual valve springs.so there is no point in buying assembled heads.also if you just want stock you can buy bare heads,SI valves and stock springs from rock auto and assembled it your self for cheaper than buying assembled heads and it will flow better;)

Hi jd4242,
Never built heads before, and am going to probably replace mine after I get the old ones off. I've been looking at the 95TMs you suggested on eBay from Engine Quest and would like to go with the SI valves and stock springs. I've been on Rock Auto and looked at their parts catalog and since I really don't know what I'm looking for, I can't find what you recommended. I have a 93XLT and want to up the compression with the 95TM heads as you recommended. I've looked for fully assembled 95TMs from engine quest, but didn't find them. Alabama Cylinders Head has them, but they don't seem to be 95TMs, they say 95 through 98 (others say these are 98TM heads). Can you help me with better part descriptions that I might be able to find on the Rock Auto web page? Also, will I have to lap valves if I install them? I've done that on a lawn mower engine once, but I've never really worked on a car engine this deeply before. I'm assuming I'll have to put seats in and guides. Is this true? Will the valves comes with guides that fit them? I watched a friend rebuild a head once but that's about it.

Thanks!

You going to upgrade your cam?if not stock valves and springs will be fine.SI valves would increase flow but not mandatory.Alabama is not a true 95tm head.

Head Build Confusion

Thanks for the reply!

No, I'm staying with the stock cam now. But I really don't know how to pick stock parts for the head build. I know I need springs, caps, keepers, and valves. Do the heads come with the seats installed? Do I need to buy guides too, or are they part of the head already installed? What is a SI valve, as I would like to have them, but don't know what SI stands for (the catalog doesn't list a SI valve that I can see). I'm really am a newbie. The parts catalog has a few choices for each valve type and I'm not sure what the stock diameters are or which parts to order to go with the engine quest bare 95TM heads.

the guides come installed.you can reuse your retainers and keepers.SI is the company that makes the valve.here is a list of everything you will need to do a top end replacement.i suggest you break your lifters down and soak in carb cleaner and clean them real good instead of buying new ones.they run $47 a piece and you would need 12,but rock auto part #HT2244 if you decide you want new ones

Nice list JD. Sums it up pretty good.
I guess my only complaint about the head supplier you list is that they won't ship to Canada. No issue for anyone looking in this thread though. Just thought I'd shed a tear in my beer. Speaking of beer (or scotch), hope your feeling 100% by now.
