Ford Bronco II, 1989, XL
Hi there, my name is Galo. I have been having fun with 4x4 since the 70’s. I have had 3 Exploreres and one Bronco II 1989. Istill have the Bronco II. I am writing to this forum cause I need some help. I remember that about a year ago I had to change seals and bearings for the rear differential. The oil was coming out, and contaminating the brake system. I found some second hand shafts locally, but it seems that they were not that good. I have same problems again. when trying to buy the axles from internet, i saw three options dependinfg on the number of splines in shaft. I dont have this number. I do have the vin code but it doesnt say much. Also, due to too much manipulation, previous mechanics lost the plat for the rear diff. How could i confirm the proper number of splines in rear diff axles? Thanks in advance for your comments.

1989 Ford Bronco II came with a Ford 7.5" rear axle
they are 28 spline axleshafts

I'm new to the forum but not new to VIN number and information sticker decoding 🤣 the axle code will be on the door specifications and VIN number sticker that's really what you need to know the ratio

Hi Denise,

i tried to go through vin code. But when introducing the number, the result is another and newer car. Ford expedition instead of Bronco II.

Check this thread for 7.5” axle info Ford Ranger/Bronco II 7.5-Inch Axle
All BII’s came with a 7.5” axle. All 7.5” axles have 28 splines. D7 = 4:10 gears.

Keep in mind your vehicle is 31 years old, so there’s a possibility that someone swapped a different axle in.

7.5 limited slip with 4.10!!! Pretty rare axle
Most BII had 3.45 or 3.73

You can verify the 4.1 gear ratio by lifting the rear axle in the air, make a mark on the axle pinion and one on a tire. rotate the tire 1 full 360 degrees, the pinion should move 4.1 times around.
