I have a big question and I'm not really sure where to post this yet, but hopefully, if this is the wrong place, some kind soul will redirect me! So here goes...

What do I have to do to (wiring wise) to swap a 2001 4.0 Explorer motor to a 1996 Explorer?

Welcome to this forum! Swapping the PCM with the wiring harness is the proper way to do it. Don't try to splice connectors into the wiring harness. You don't want to have cut wiring with crimp connectors all over the engine bay.
