My daughter has had this 6.0 SOHC XLT only a couple of months but the big bug a boo has been the AWD system. The truck was locked in 4WD, had the transfer case rebuilt, clutch pack, seals and bearing were bad. Last weekend I installed a new U Joint on the front drive shaft. The 4WDL light still blinks 6x's every couple of minutes. You can hear and feel the transfer case/Shift motor work when put into/out of 4WDL to AWD (put in Neutral and brake enacted) but not when put into 4WDH or back into AWD. Truck is now whining/grinding at low speeds and it still has front end lock up and popping when you pull into a tight parking spot or drive way. The 4WDH light does not come on at the dash when you move the AWD switch to 4WDH either. Could it be the shift module or am I looking at the front Diff being bad? The grinding does not occur with the front drive shaft out.

what you are referring to as the all wheel drive system is not AWD, is it Automatic Four Wheel Drive. AWD is a fully mechanical system that cannot be shifted in or out of 2 or 4 wheel drive.

for more info on your problem you might want to look in the transmissions, transfer cases, differentials section. lots of useful threads covering problems similar to yours.
