Yesterday I replaced my pinion seal. I marked how drive shaft was bolted up and noted how many threads were showing on pinion nut (4 threads). I changed seal put back together , tightened until 4 threads were showing, and put drive shaft back were it belonged, filled with synthtic 75w140 gear oil. SO, yesterday I drove the car home from were I worked on it(4 miles). Seemed everything was fine. Then today i drove and got something to eat. Decided to take the interstate home. As soon as I hit 70 a bad roaring, and anything over 70 roared. So i went a few miles on interstate and exited and took the back way home, making sure I could make it home. After I got off interstate the rest of the way home there was a small vibration. But it was not much of a vibraton. SO, is it to late for my rear end. A pull your own parts place gets 280 dollars for a complete axle w/rear end assembly. Seems thats the easiest route to take if its not saveable. I went estimated 20 miles since changing seal.

just counting threads isn't good enough. did you also mark the position of the nut relative to the yoke?

at this point I would get a new crush-sleeve and try torqueing the nut to spec. if you're lucky, you haven't done too much damage yet. the noise is because the ring and pinion gear teeth are not engaging completely, or are engaging too deeply.

I bout bet you you have a wore out universal joint. Replace that first, the rear end is OK. been there, done that. You changed the way the cross was posisoned when you took it apart. 99% of all rearend problems are univseral joint problems. we make drive shafts were I work.

Pinion Flange Nut

Torque requirement is 160 Ft-Lb. If the pinion bearing preload exceeds specification (.9-1.6 In-Lb) with a used bearing before this torque is obtained you need to replace the crush sleeve.
